The most common type of head injuries, traumatic brain injuries are caused by a blunt trauma to the skull, and may result in the victim losing consciousness for some amount of time, be it minutes, weeks, or months. Such injuries damage delicate brain tissue. Most often, motor vehicle accidents, recreational accidents, falls, construction accidents, acts of violence, or other blows to the head cause traumatic brain injuries. Frequently, the rebounding that the brain suffers in a blunt trauma causes diffuse damage, namely, the brain may bruise, swell, or tear.
Bruising: This too is caused by the sudden impact of the brain colliding with something. The soft tissue is slammed into the much harder skull, causing blood vessels to break and allowing blood to escape into the brain. Blood loose in the brain puts pressure on brain tissue, possibly causing parts of the brain to stop functioning.
Swelling: Because the hard bone of the skull surrounds the brain, when the brain swells, there is a finite amount of room for expansion. Because the skull does not expand to accommodate the swelling brain, pressure inside the skull increases, possibly causing severe consequences.
Tearing: The sudden impact of the brain colliding with another object can cause delicate tissue to tear apart. Although modern medical technology may not detect tearing, it is nonetheless a serious brain injury.
